KATHMANDU, Nepal - Several violent incidents have been reported across the country during the Friday local elections. Rival political party activists clashed in some places, and some miscreants attempted to disrupt the election in others.
To quell the scuffles, security personnel fired warning shots in some areas.
When security personnel opened fire to disperse a mob in Gorkha, a volunteer was shot. According to police, security personnel were forced to open fire after a violent clash between supporters of the Congress and the Maoist Centre.
"We had no choice but to open fire to protect the polling station and control the enraged mob after the Congress and Maoist activists clashed," said Superintendent of Police Kedar Khanal. According to him, Manish Thapa, a poll volunteer, was shot in the thigh.
Election-related violence was reported between one and a half dozen locations across the country. Following sporadic clashes in various places, security personnel were forced to intervene. In some areas, police officers fired into the air to control the situation.
