PHNOM PENH, May 26 (Xinhua/Big News Network) -- Cambodia is ready to host the 12th ASEAN Para Games from June 3 to 9, a sports official said here on Friday.
Yi Veasna, secretary general of the National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia, said a total of 252 Cambodian athletes, including 76 women, will contest against athletes from 10 other southeast Asian countries in 14 sports.
All 11 members of ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF) are expected to take part in the 2023 ASEAN para Games.
These comprise Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, and Vietnam.
The sports at the Para Games are athletics, badminton, boccia, chess, 5-a-side football, 7-a-side football, blind basketball, judo, weightlifting, swimming, men's and women's table tennis, men's and women's sitting volleyball, men's and women's wheelchair basketball, and e-sports.
"We expect the number of medals gained in the upcoming games will increase to 56 medals from the 28 medals earned in the 11th ASEAN Para Games," Veasna said during a meeting with the athletes.
"It's expected that Cambodia will rank sixth out of the 11 participating countries on the table of medals," he added.
At the 11th ASEAN Para Games held in Solo city, Indonesia in 2022, Cambodia took seven gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze medals.
According to Veasna, the 60,000-seat Morodok Techo National Stadium in the capital Phnom Penh will be the centerpiece venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, and the competitions.
