LAHORE, Pakistan - On Thursday, anti-corruption officials arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvez Elahi near his Lahore residence.
Anti-corruption staff detained the former Punjab chief minister after stopping his car near Elahi's Lahore's Gulberg district residence.
His spokesperson has confirmed the news.
The police conducted several raids over the last few days to apprehend the PTI leader but came up empty-handed.
The development comes after an anti-corruption court revoked his interim bail last week for failing to appear in court due to health issues.
His arrest was required concerning the Rs70 million corruption case involving the embezzlement of development funds designated for the Gujrat district.
The anti-corruption court judge ruled that his medical certificate, which claimed that Elahi was suffering from chest pain, was bogus.
According to Punjab Caretaker Information Minister Amir Mir, Elahi is wanted by anti-corruption police in a graft case.
He claimed that the PTI president was fleeing from his home when police stopped him and arrested him.
The minister also stated that he resisted the arrest, but the police were able to apprehend him.
Hundreds of PTI leaders and workers have been arrested since May 9, when violent protests erupted almost across the country.
The crackdown on PTI leadership in the aftermath of the May 9 riots triggered a wave of desertion in the former ruling party, with many bigwigs leaving the party in protest of the violent protests, including Shireen Mazari, Fawad Chaudhry, Aami Mehmood Kiani, Ali Zaidi, and others.
Elahi was appointed president of the PTI in March of this year, just a month after he and ten former MPs left the PML-Q to join the PTI.
