ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif left for Turkey on Friday to attend the inauguration of his "brother," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Mehmet Paaci, bid PM Shehbaz farewell as he left for a two-day trip.
"Leaving for Turkey at the invitation of my brother, HE President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to attend his inauguration ceremony," the prime minister tweeted before leaving Islamabad.
The prime minister said he would convey the "warmest greetings" to President Erdogan on the Pakistani government's and people's behalf.
"The brotherly ties between Pakistan and Turkey are set to deepen even further in line with our shared resolve and common destiny," he said.
He said both countries "have yet to realize the full potential of our multifaceted relationship, and efforts are underway in that direction."
Last week, President Erdogan won a mandate to pursue increasingly authoritarian policies that have polarised Turkey and strengthened its position as a regional military power extending his two decades in power.
His opponent, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, called the election "the most unfair election in years" but did not contest the outcome.
